Turn It UP

TURN IT UP

For me music is more than just notes floating across a page. It is the essence that I live my life by. Through each phase of my life, I can recall songs that became my “theme song” for the particular moment involved.

Music is a way of life, something that can touch the soul and express feelings that may have been hard to explain with just words. The beat, the lyrics, the melody, everything about a song can make a person feel happy or sad, all depending on the situation.

I have always had a passion for music, being a trained pianist and percussionist it just comes natural for me to have a love of music. When you meet people and learn of their musical tastes you can almost always pinpoint their personality.

To give everyone a little incite into my personality I will list the “must haves” that are in my cd player at all times.

1. Incubus-Make Yourself: This cd changed my life. It introduced me to a whole new way of thinking about music. I first started listening to Incubus when I was 14 years old and fell in love with the style of music, the lyrics, and the guitar riffs.

2. Jeff Buckley- Grace: Jeff Buckley’s voice is what really gets me on this cd. The lyrics are beautiful and the raw emotion can be heard in his voice. He died in 1997 after a drowning accident, but I feel comfortable saying that he will be an artist that people discover and fall in love with. Sometimes when you have just had a terrible, no good, very bad day, you can throw on this cd and get lost in the music. It is calming and will take you on a journey.

3. David Bowie- China Girl: I love David Bowie! I love David Bowie when he is Ziggy Stardust, with Queen, even when he is Jareth in the Labyrinth.  His theatrics, the music is timeless, something that just makes you feel good. I challenge you to listen to this album and not sway to “Golden Years.” His performances are immaculate and his music is feel good.

4. Death Cab for Cutie-Narrow Stairs: This album is fairly new on my list of must haves. I was never a big fan of this band until this album. The lead singers voice is inviting and the way that the lyrics are manipulated with the melody is intriguing. This album feel likes Death Cab’s “coming out” cd. When compared to their previous cd’s you can tell that the band has evolved and the members have grown up.

5. Shooter Jennings- Put the “O” Back in Country: Shooter is the son of Waylon Jennings. I first experienced his music when he opened for Willie Nelson in Austin. When he sings he sounds just like his dad, I am a fan of old country musicians like Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty and Patty Loveless. Shooter brings the old country and mixes it with his new style that is sure to make anyone who grew up in the country to revisit their roots.

6. Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon: What can I say. I am a sucker for long intros and smooth guitar chords. Pink Floyd has been one of my favorites for a very long time. I don’t know if it the contrast of the soothing Dark Side of the Moon and the maniacal sound of The Wall. Either way Pink Floyd is classic that will keep coming back when you least expect it.

Everyday is a mini tragedy

Soooo it has been about a month since I wrote a blog.

The other morning I woke up and walked outside to head to work to discover I had a flat tire. I was angry and in my anger decided that I would walk to work....in the 37 degree weather....right.

Now later that week I caught the dishwasher on fire.  Let me explain! I clean every weekend, it's my thing, it's what I do. I had everything done and the dishwasher on and was hanging out in the living room. The afternoon was mild enough so I had the windows open. I wander to the bathroom and as I am returning to the LR I notice it seems really smoky. So I start going to each candle to make sure something didn't get in them and start a fire. Seeing as nothing was caught I assume that perhaps someone is burning trash outside and that is why it is so smoky. I start to notice that no no, it smells really bad in the kitchen so I glance at the dishwasher and see smoke coming out the top. WITH A QUICKNESS I open it up and jerk out the bottom rack to discover that a measuring cup had fallen down during the drying cycle and commenced to melt.  So that is how I set the dishwasher on fire.

To make things more fun, my fridge died yesterday. Yup, one thing after another. So I sucked it up and bought a new one, something that I did not want to finance for but it must be done.

Alas just another day in the life of Jami.  If it wasn't for the mini tragedies...I'd have nothing to make fun of myself for.

A bit of my music

Pumpkin Extravaganza

So on Saturday I hosted a little slumber party for my two nieces. I can see it now, my house is going to be the place all the kids flock...I had a little taste Saturday evening.

I went to the store and got a couple pumpkins for carving, I figured that it would fun for my nieces and myself to do a little decorating...kill two birds with one stone you could say. I get decorations, they get entertained.

Much to my surprise it turned into a party. It started with myself, Leigh-Lou and Mady. Then two of their friends Haley and Ausland Jones came over, their grandmother lives right down the street from me.

My four soon turned into six. I don't know how it happened but it did! Two boys came over, the girls acted like they knew them, so I figured what the hell, why not?!

I had a gaggle of children on my front porch all helping carve these two pumpkins. Well....semi-carving, Mady, my eldest niece, made one cut in the pumpkin and then declared she was bored. So while I carved her pumpkin (let me emphasize that she picked a hard stencil) she and her friends did cartwheels.

Of course she would come and point at the pumpkin that I was slaving over and proudly say "Look there is my pumpkin, isn't it pretty?" Leigh-Lou was very impressive, she carved her whole pumpkin by herself. I have to admit I think hers' turned out better than mine. I was outdone by a six year old!!!

All in all I think it was successful. All the kids hung around and played until it was dusk when I lit them and then sent everyone to their houses.

So if you happen to be driving around town, drive by the house and take a gander at my Jack-O-Laterns. They were made with love by me and the neighborhood children!
